Research by FAFO tabulated chores by Haitian girls and boy servants into daily, weekly, and monthly categories.
Most common daily tasks include:
- Washing dishes
- Sweeping compounds
- Fetching water or firewood
- Making fire in the morning
- Prepare meals and work to prepare food in general
- Run errands
- Serve as caretakers for children or seniors
- Help adults with their work
- Laundry
- Other household chores
Most common weekly tasks included:
- Laundry
- Hauling/Disposing of garbage, and
- Cleaning latrines
Most common monthly tasks included:
- Agricultural work, and
- Carrying products to the marketplace.
Chores Often Expose Haitian Girl Servants to Danger
Research exposed that young girls and boy servants very often are working around and with dangerous items like hot stoves, assorted household chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, and sharp objects like knives.
Restavek
In Haiti, many poor rural families hoping to provide a better future for their children send them to live as domestic servants in the homes of urban / semi-urban families. These children, mostly girls, are extremely vulnerable to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. These children are known as Restavek.
Data Source
Haiti Now relied on data obtained from the FAFO Research Foundation and the Institut Haitian del’ Enfance. The data was collected in 2013 - 2014.

- leave domestic servitude, and
- prepare for the future they and their parents had hoped for.
Our current goal is to build a residential school for Restavek girls . We intend to provide the support needed for these girls to build a healthy and financially secure future, all under one roof.
In this residential school, girls will receive:
- an accelerated education,
- health care,
- emotional support,
- mentoring,
- arts and sports,
- healthy socialization with peers and adults, and
- business incubation.
