Rural Households have more Difficulty Raising Money than Urban Households

Research on the financial capability of raising money

In Haiti, rural households struggle to raise money in comparison to urban families. Also, homes with girls often struggle more than those with boys to raise money.
 
The situation grew worse when they were female Child Domestic Workers (CDW). Specifically, data shows that 53.8 percent of such households had no way to raise money. In comparison, 15.5 percent of households without them were unable to.
 
Opposite, the city households with female CDW were in a better situation. They had savings to depend on. In particular, only 18.3 of such households found it impossible to raise money.
 
The situation is better for rural households having boys. Around 36.8 percent of such households found it impossible to raise money in rural areas. In comparison, 12.5 percent of such households in urban areas were unable to.
 
Usually, the others either borrow money or seek help from relatives and public aid.

Restavek

In Haiti, many poor rural families send their children to be domestic servants in hopes of a better life. Usually, they work for urban / semi-urban families. Furthermore, these children, mostly girls, are vulnerable to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Thus, people call these children Restavek.

Data Source

Haiti Now relied on data obtained from the FAFO Research Foundation and the Institut Haitian del’ Enfance. The data was collected from 2013 - 2014.

Another Option for Abandoned Girls in Domestic Servitude

Haiti Now ‘s mission is to give Restavek girls the ability to:

  • leave domestic servitude, and 
  • prepare for the future they and their parents had hoped for.

Our current goal is to build a residential school for Restavek girls. We intend to provide the support needed for these girls to build a healthy and financially secure future, all under one roof. 

In this residential school, girls will receive:

  • an accelerated education, 
  • health care, 
  • emotional support, 
  • mentoring, 
  • arts and sports, and 
  • healthy socialization with peers and adults.
