Data for School Attendance and Sources of Support

Overall, 71 percent of school-age Restavek or child domestic workers (CDW) attend school. 29 percent do not attend school. Generally, 81 percent of CDW had no support for education. In particular, family members (10 percent) or others (8 percent) supported the rest.

For those not attending school, 88 percent don’t have any kind of support. Namely, the reasons for not attending include the following:

  • No money for school fees or other school costs
  • Not allowed to attend school by own household
  • No ID papers
  • No time
  • Not interested
  • Repeated exam failure.

For those attending school, 78 percent did not have support. Specifically, financial support came from the following sources:

  • The State or another organization
  • Parents
  • Others Relatives
  • Non-relatives.

Restavek

In Haiti, many poor rural families for their children send them to live as domestic servants. This is in hopes of them having a better future. Usually, in the homes of urban / semi-urban families. These children, mostly girls are vulnerable to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Hence, these children are Restavek.

Data Source

Haiti Now used data obtained from the FAFO Research Foundation and the Institut Haitian del’ Enfance. Particularly, the data was collected from 2013 - 2014.

Another Option for Abandoned Girls in Domestic Servitude

Haiti Now ‘s mission is to give Restavek girls the ability to:

  • leave domestic servitude, and 
  • prepare for the future they and their parents had hoped for.

Our current goal is to build a residential school for Restavek girls. We intend to provide the support needed for these girls to build a healthy and financially secure future, all under one roof. 

In this residential school, girls will receive:

  • an accelerated education, 
  • health care, 
  • emotional support, 
  • mentoring, 
  • arts and sports, and 
  • healthy socialization with peers and adults.
