Research on average annual spending per person

The mean annual family spending per person is greater in Haiti's outbacks than in its cities. According to 2013-2014 data, this is because personal spending increases in smaller families. This applies to families of one to three members. Likewise, the ability to spend per person became lesser in a larger household. This refers to families having between four and ten members in both rural and urban areas.
 
For instance, a household having one to three members each spent around $151 per person on a yearly basis. In such a household the average income was up to $609. 5.7 percent of rural families have the ability to spend $151 per person. In comparison, 3.3 percent of families can in urban areas. This is due to the higher cost of living in cities and bigger towns.
 
Conversely, larger families comprising eight to ten members spent only $33 per person. Around 3.6 percent of such families could afford to spend this much per person in urban areas. Yet, the percentage of such families in rural areas was higher at 8.2 percent.
 
The percentage of rural and urban areas having a combined household income between $610 and $7,317 is low. In particular, only large families of eight to ten members had an income of  $7,317 and more. The percentage of such families in rural areas is a minuscule 0.9 percent. In comparison, 3.9 percent of such families are in urban areas. There are more opportunities to work and earn well there.

Restavek

In Haiti, many poor rural families hoping to provide a better future for their children send them to live as domestic servants in the homes of urban / semi-urban families. These children, mostly girls are extremely vulnerable to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. These children are known as Restavek.

Data Source

Haiti Now relied on data obtained from the FAFO Research Foundation and the Institut Haitian del’ Enfance. The data was collected from 2013 - 2014.

Another Option for Abandoned Girls in Domestic Servitude

Haiti Now ‘s mission is to give Restavek girls the ability to:

  • leave domestic servitude, and 
  • prepare for the future they and their parents had hoped for.

Our current goal is to build a residential school for Restavek girls. We intend to provide the support needed for these girls to build a healthy and financially secure future, all under one roof. 

In this residential school, girls will receive:

  • an accelerated education, 
  • health care, 
  • emotional support, 
  • mentoring, 
  • arts and sports, and 
  • healthy socialization with peers and adults.
